Workplace Stress

Workplace Stress

Work is meant to give structure, income and purpose. When the demands of the job outweigh what you can reasonably manage, the body and mind stay on high alert. That is workplace stress.

A short burst of pressure before a deadline is normal. Workplace stress becomes a problem when it does not switch off — when you leave work still tense, sleep poorly, dread Monday, or feel you are only just holding things together.

What workplace stress can look like

People often notice:

  • feeling on edge, irritable or tearful at work or at home
  • trouble concentrating, deciding or remembering
  • sleep that will not settle, or waking already tired
  • headaches, tight shoulders, stomach upset, or a racing heart
  • working longer hours and still feeling behind
  • withdrawing from colleagues, family or usual interests
  • loss of confidence, or a sense that nothing you do is enough
  • using alcohol, food or extra work to cope

You do not need a “dramatic” workplace for this to be real. High workload, unclear expectations, conflict, bullying, shift work, job insecurity, return-to-work pressure after injury, or a culture that never lets you switch off are all enough.

Why it matters

Ongoing workplace stress is not a character flaw. It is a signal that the load and the support are out of balance. Left unattended it can feed anxiety, low mood, burnout, relationship strain and physical health problems. For some people it is also linked to a psychological injury at work and may sit alongside a WorkCover or rehabilitation process.

How we can help

At Alegna Solutions we look at both the person and the situation. Sessions may include:

  • making sense of what is driving the stress, rather than only treating the symptoms
  • practical strategies for sleep, boundaries, communication and recovery
  • skills for high-pressure conversations, conflict and return-to-work
  • support if you are dealing with bullying, harassment or an injury claim
  • a plan that respects your values and your capacity — not a demand to “just be more resilient”

Support is available in person on the Gold Coast and by video consultation.
